Artificial Empathy: The Ethics of AI-Assisted Mental Health 👩🏻‍⚕️

Mental health company KoKo sparked public outcry after testing an AI-powered chatbot on patients without informing them. The experiment, which employed a ‘co-pilot’ approach, used OpenAI's GPT3 large language model to provide responses to patients' messages, which were then sent to anonymous volunteers. The feature, which was reportedly "opt-in", meaning that it required users explicit consent to use it, caused users to question the ethical implications of simulated empathy and violation of trust in the therapist-patient relationship
