Diamond in the Rough: DreamerV3's AI Minecraft Mastery 💎

Introducing DreamerV3, the algorithm that's striking gold (or diamonds, in this case) in the world of AI. This general algorithm has managed to collect diamonds in Minecraft from scratch, solving a long-standing challenge in the field of AI. DreamerV3 is the first algorithm that learns to master many domains without tuning, making reinforcement learning broadly applicable. With fixed hyperparameters, it outperforms other approaches across a wide range of domains and has favorable scaling properties, allowing it to increase performance and data-efficiency with larger models. This groundbreaking algorithm is making reinforcement learning more accessible and scalable for hard decision-making problems. Time to mine some diamonds, AI style!

DeepMind CEO urges caution in AI development: 'Don't move fast and break things' 🤕

DeepMind, a subsidiary of Alphabet, is one of the world's leading artificial intelligence labs. Recently, they announced the success of one of their algorithm, AlphaFold, that can predict the 3D structures of almost all known proteins. Now, they're applying similar machine-learning techniques to nuclear fusion, hoping to yield a cheap, zero-carbon energy source.

However, DeepMind's CEO, Hassabis, is urging caution with AI as there is potential for it to be repurposed to make deadly new chemicals, spew out toxic hate speech, and be commandeered by rogue states. He believes that AI is on the cusp of making tools that could be deeply damaging to human civilization and urges competitors to proceed with more caution than before.

Pen and Paper 2.0: Australian Universities Fight Against AI Cheating ✍️

Australian universities are changing the way they conduct exams and assessments, due to concerns that students are using AI software to write essays. Institutions have added new rules to prohibit the use of AI in exams, with some students already caught using the software. However, experts warn that universities are in an "arms race" they can never win, as more advanced AI systems, like GPT-4, are on the horizon. Universities are now relying more on pen and paper exams and tests, as well as supervised exams and other methods to prevent cheating.
